Standard Book Designs
The most successful nonfiction publishers today all use standard books
designs. If you have ever picked up an Idiot’s Guide or a For DUMMIES
books, you are familiar with the concept. Books built on standard templates are
used in all the most popular nonfiction categories, from travel to cookbooks,
because it is the only economical way to publish.
From the beginning, Clearbridge Publishing invested in professional designs
that were created as reusable templates. Both our cover
designs and interior text designs were
intentionally made to be easy to adapt to new titles. The success of this
concept has been proven by our books consistently receiving award recognition.
These standard designs offer several benefits:
- Extremely Cost Effective: Using a standard design saves you money not only
on book design but on printing as well. The size and format were chosen to minimize waste on commercial presses. Using these templates
ensures that you will avoid extremely expensive mistakes in putting together your
books.
- Much Easier to Sell: Since people judge books by their covers, these
designs make it much easier to market your books. They ensure a
professional look and feel that will be accepted in standard book distribution
channels and can even help you win book awards, since design is always considered in
competitions.
- Easier to Write: Our templates also make it much easier for you to
develop your book. In many respects, working from most of our
text templates is like using a paint-by-numbers kit for writing your book. Using these designs makes
writing a book almost as easy as filling in the blanks.
We offer our trainers three basic cover designs and five interior designs.
The designs are better than those used in 99.8 percent of the books published. All
have won award recognition.
Format: All our designs are provided as Adobe InDesign documents.
InDesign has become the software typesetting standard in the book industry.
Since InDesign is fairly expensive, we can do the typesetting for you, pasting
your text into the formats for an additional charge. If you plan to write more than
one book or produce other documents such as brochures, InDesign is a good
investment.
Fonts: Clearbridge has purchased certain designer fonts
to use as part
of our designs. You can use these fonts if you publish your books as part
of the Clearbridge product line. However, if you publish them under your own
imprint, you must either purchase your own fonts or replace our fonts with
commonly available fonts that come with your system.
Very simply, books are judged by their covers. If you can afford to buy only one design, get a cover design. A graphic design tells everyone whether or not
you are a professional and gets someone to pick up the book and open it.
Jacket designs can be used for either covers or jackets. Jacketed books have a
cloth cover with a paper jacket, which is the standard for first-release
hardcover books in the book industry. Cover designs without a jacket can be used
either with cloth (hardcover) covers or paperback covers. Designs include
separations for four-color printing, gold foil, and embossing.
Cover designs include front, back, and spine. Jackets include designs for
front and back jacket flaps. Back design includes the ISBN bar code, which we
will provide at no charge. If you are publishing through Clearbridge, we will
provide bar code numbers. If you self-publish, we will instruct you on how to
register for your own bar codes.
The three cover designs we offer are as follows:
- Art of War Jacket Design: Jacket design for a 6" x 9"
book.
This is the design we use for 80 percent of our books. We built this design
around images of the Chinese terracotta warriors from the tomb of the first
emperor of China; we can also provide these images.
-
Expert Author Jacket Design: Jacket design for a 6" x 9" book.
This is the design we use for our
Making Money by Speaking book, which is a finalist for this year’s Book of the
Year Award. It is build around a picture of the book’s author. Most
professional speakers use their picture on their books.
- Gift Book Cover Design: Cover design for a 5" X 7" book. This is
the design used for our Golden Key and 9 Formulas books. This is
a simpler, less expensive design alternative. In hardcover, the book is a
cloth cover.
Pricing: We charge licensed trainers $150 for the use of any one of our
jacket/cover designs. If you do not own InDesign and want us to do the cover
typesetting, it will cost you another $150 for the basic typesetting. If changes
are required, we charge $30 an hour to make them.
Included Material: Internal designs give you the layout of all the
text in a book. The text formats we offer include page designs for the front
matter, title pages, copyright pages, table of contents, preface, introduction,
chapter, and back matter layout.
-
Art of War Adaptation Text Format:
6" x 9" pages. This is the most commonly used standard format. It is the side-by-side format with Sun
Tzu’s Art of War on the left-hand pages and your adaptation of Sun Tzu’s
concepts on the facing right-hand pages. There are two variations of this
design, the line-by-line version used in our sales, management, etc.,
adaptations, and our stanza-by-stanza version, used in Warrior’s
Apprentice,
Amazing Secrets, etc. Both designs include callouts on the side for graphics
and/or key concepts. Since this format includes our award-winning translation
of The Art of War, Gary Gagliardi must be listed on the cover and title pages
as the translator. For books published through Clearbridge, Gary can be listed
as a co-author and he
will write the introduction. For these versions, other
standard material, such as terracotta warrior illustrations, our Introduction
to Key Concepts, Key Concepts Glossary, and Art of War contents
sections can also be included.
- Warrior Class One-Page Lesson Format:
6" x 9" pages. This
is our workbook format, in which each stanza of The Art of War is turned
into a one-page lesson, starting with a question, followed by a stanza of Sun
Tzu, followed by an answer and explanation. Since this format includes our
award-winning translation of The Art of War, Gary Gagliardi must be
listed on the cover and title pages as the translator. For books published
through Clearbridge, Gary can be listed as a co-author and he will write the
introduction. For these versions, other standard material, such as terracotta warrior illustrations,
our Introduction to Key Concepts, Key Concepts Glossary, and Art of War
contents section, can also be included.
-
Golden Key Two-Page Lesson Format:
5" x 7" pages. This is the
design used in our book The Golden Key to Strategy, which won the Ben Franklin
Award as the best self-help book in 2006. It includes separate section designs
for quotes, stories, principles, graphics, and so on. For books published
through Clearbridge, this design can also include Golden Key and/or
9 Formulas graphic elements at no additional charge. Existing Golden Key
text can be used with adaptation to your own, specific area of
expertise, but then Gary Gagliardi must be listed as a co-author.
-
9 Formulas Chapter Format:
5" x 7" pages. This is the design
used in our 9 Formulas for (Competitive) Business Success book. This design
is used for
books that require multipage, free-form chapters of varying lengths, but it
also can be directly and easily adapted to specific business topics, for
example, 9 Formulas for Strategy Consulting Success. When existing 9 Formulas text
is used with adaptation to your
own, specific area of expertise, Gary Gagliardi must be listed as a
co-author. For
books published through Clearbridge, this design can also include Golden
Key and/or 9 Formulas graphic elements at no additional charge.
-
Money Speaking Chapter Format:
6" x 9" pages. This is the design
used in our Making Money by Speaking book. This design is used for books
that require multipage, free-form chapters of varying lengths. This design is for
books that are the least formulaic, but could theoretically be adapted to
topics like Making Money by Speaking for the Corporate Executive. Because
it has the fewest reused elements, this format gives authors more freedom and,
conversely, can require much more original work on the part of the author than
our other formats.
Pricing: We charge licensed trainers $250 for the use of any one of our
text designs. If you do not own InDesign and want us to do the
typesetting, we charge $30 an hour for doing the typesetting, making editing changes,
and so on.
